No. 526: Effects of fishery on boulder reefs vegetation, a pilot project at Store Middelgrund in Kattegat

Dahl, K. NERI Technical report no. 526, 2005

Summary

The total cover of erect algal species on the reef Store Middelgrund in Kattegat, designated as Special area of Conservation, deviated substantially on three stations from the expected cover based on a model for that particular reef. Large frames located on the stony seabed with rather simple measuring equipment showed that substantial physical disturbance had occurred and this was probably caused by trawl fishery. Sea urchins were observed on two of the investigated stations.

Further studies are needed to distinguish between the role of physical disturbance and the role of grassing.
