Summary

This report investigates the historical landscape development on Danish military areas since the 1880s. The report is based on a survey and delineation of current and former military sites larger than 10 hectares. Based on interpretation of historical topographical maps, the historical development of land use and land cover is analyzed. Result suggests that development of the military sites can be grouped into six different trajectories. The identified trajectories form a framework for an analysis of the contemporary land use and biodiversity content on the 113 sites. Results show a significant difference in land use and biodiversity between military sites and the surrounding landscape. The nationwide analysis is supplemented with a case study of Jægerspris firing range, investigating historical aerial imagery for an analysis of the landscape development.
