No. 252: Screening for selected pesticides in streams and groundwater. NOVANA

Screening for udvalgte pesticider i vandløb og grundvand. NOVANA. Bossi, R., Sortkjær, O. & Juhler, R.K. 2009. Danmarks Miljøundersøgelser, Aarhus Universitet. 22 s.- Arbejdsrapport fra DMU nr. 252.

Summary

In this screening investigation the following pesticides have been analyzed in surface water, groundwater and freshwater sediments: chlorpyrifos, chlorfenvinfos, fenpropidin, tau-fluvalinate and cypermethrine. Chlorpyrifos and chlorfenvinfos are listed as priority compounds in the EU-Water Framework Directive. The main scope of this screening was to investigate the occurrence of these two compounds in the freshwater environment. The other three pesticides were included in the investigation as they are currently being used in Denmark and could be analyzed together with chlorpyrifos and chlorfenvinfos.

The occurrence of the selected pesticides was investigated in three LOOP areas (Lillebæk, Højvads Rende, and Bolbro Bæk). Moreover sediment samples from 15 selected small streams have been analyzed.

Twelve surface water samples and 5 groundwater samples have been analysed for pesticides. No pesticides were found in these samples. Considering groundwater it should be noted that sampling was made in the autumn, about a couple of months after application of the pesticides. For this reason possible pulse exposure of young groundwater was not addressed in the current screening.

A total of 15 sediment samples have been analysed. Chlorpyrifos has been detected in five sediment samples with concentrations ranging from 1.5 and 3.7 µg/kg DW. Cypermethrine was found in four sediment samples with concentrations ranging from 1.5 and 4.8 µg/kg DW. Tau-fluvalinate was found in 2 sediment samples at 12 and 3.6 µg/kg DW. Only in one stream (Ellebæk) the two pyrethroids were found in the same sample. Chlorfenvinfos and fenpropidin were not found in any sample.
