A drastic increase in the number of wintering barnacle geese in Guldborgsund Municipality, southeast Denmark, gives rise to conflicts with agricultural interests, because the geese predominantly feed on arable land. However, in spring the barnacle geese show a preference for salt marshes and extensively farmed grasslands where they are not regarded as a problem. A mapping of the state of the salt marshes and grasslands in May-June 2020 showed that only approximately half of the areas are suitable for geese and that several large connected areas are overgrown due to lack of livestock grazing or mowing. If these areas can be grazed or mowed, it will considerably increase the potential for geese. In this report the mapping of the salt marshes and adjacent grasslands is presented together with a proposal for a prioritisation of areas for management efforts to provide accommodation for geese as a means to alleviate the agricultural conflict.
