The topic centres ensure the collection, storage and quality assurance of monitoring data at a national level. The collected and stored data must be available at all times for all the parties involved in monitoring for use in national and international reports.

The topic centres carry out the following tasks under NOVANA:

• Develop sampling methods
• Prepare technical specifications for sampling and storing data
• Are responsible for nationwide data storage, quality assurance of data and data processing
• Prepare nationwide scientific reports of sub-sections
• Organise intercalibration of sampling procedures and field methods
• Enter into collaboration with the Danish Environment Protection Agency’s scientific coordination groups

DCE runs the following scientific data centres:

• Marine Topic Centre
• Freshwater Topic Centre (website in Danish only)
• Topic Centre for Substance Leaching from Cultivated Areas (website in Danish only)
• Topic Centre for Biodiversity and Terrestrial Environment (website in Danish only)
• Topic Centre for Air Quality 

Two more scientific data centres are run by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency:
