New Danish greenhouse emission inventory to EU and UN

Denmark’s total greenhouse gas emissions measured in CO2 equivalents have decreased by 11% from 1990 to 2010. The figure does not comprise the net contribution from forestry and land-use. If this is included the reduction is 19.4 %.

Denmark’s total greenhouse gas emissions measured in CO2 equivalents have decreased by 11% from 1990 to 2010. The figure does not comprise the net contribution from forestry and land-use. If this is included the reduction is 19.4%. This information appears in Denmark’s annual report on greenhouse gas emissions published by DCE – Danish Centre for Environment and Energy, Aarhus University.

On behalf of the Danish Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Building, DCE – Danish Centre for Environment and Energy, Aarhus University, is responsible for estimating and reporting the national emission inventories to the EU and the UN convention on climate changes (UNFCCC).

In accordance with the guidelines for the inventories, the emissions are not corrected for trade with electricity and temperature fluctuations from year to year.

CO2 is the most important greenhouse gas and contributed in 2010 with 79.1% of the total national emission followed by nitrous oxide (N2O) with 10% and methane (CH4) with 9.4%, while the industrial gases HPCs, PFCs and SF6 only accounted for 1.5% of total emissions. Over the period 1990-2010 these percentages have been increasing for CO2 and industrial gases, while they have been nearly constant for CH4 and declining for N2O.

Divided into sectors, energy (primarily stationary combustion plants), transport and agriculture were the main contributors in 2010 with, respectively, 58%, 22% and 15% of the Danish national emission totals.
